I don’t know what it is about the night, when most people are unconscious to the world, that fires me up. Superstitious people sometimes say that the moon makes poets go crazy. Well, there’s not even half a moon out tonight, but I’m more than half-awake.
I’m sleepy by day and bright-eyed by night. Today I took a nap from 2:45 this afternoon until around 4:00. The only reason I woke up was the knock on my door. Otherwise I’d have remained unconscious to the world for the rest of the light of day.
I like being the only one in sight when I’m walking around outside in the dark. It’s how I notice God’s presence the strongest. I’m alone if someone happens to peek out their window and see me wandering around outside like a ghost with no place to haunt, yet I don’t feel alone. Sometimes I talk to God without really thinking about it because I know so well that He’s there.
And then there are the times when I’m inside at night, like tonight. I admit that I’ve written some of my best poetry in the middle of the night. Pieces like “When I Saw You” and “Pyromaniac” were both products of my insomniac activity. Still, though, I’m not superstitious; I’m just wide awake in the mass unconsciousness that surrounds me.
I suppose it’s only natural that I have insomniac friends and an insomniac boyfriend. We have the tendency to be awake at midnight wondering what on Earth is still open at that hour. We often wind up driving to the H. E. B. to buy us each a pint of Ben & Jerry’s, then take it back to someone’s apartment and give ourselves sugar highs. Life is sweet.
Right now, I have my stereo on loud as I type as fast as The Flash did in that one episode when his regular-citizen self was scrolling through forensic files. I wonder if my neighbor has his stereo on, too; hell if I know, he can blast the music and I can’t hear it unless I open my door. I hope my walls are just as soundproof. If not, I guess there are going to be more insomniacs roaming the dark city tonight.

The present and future are not about who you were in the past-rather, they are about who you are and who you will become.

Life surprises you! And I'm talking about the good stuff, because a bad surprise is not a surprise at all, it is just shock and horror. All of these good surprises, they are rewards, and the things that happen to remind you that you matter and that you should make yourself faithful so that you can be deserving of all of life's good surprises. Every wonderful surprise in life is a chance to flourish, so grab life by the horns-but don't ride, steer instead: life's horns are life's joystick. You can handle it, because your life's horns are made especially for you. If you don't give up, all of this will hold true and life will continue to surprise you.
