I just got off the phone with an old friend of mine. After reading his status messages on Facebook over the past couple of days, I inexplicably became compelled to call him.
He had boldly made an announcement to the world: He’s gay. I found it quite bold of him to come out because he is also a very faithful Christian who attends my church in my hometown. Christians tend to give gays (as well as other groups, such as Goths and emos) a hard time because of Leviticus 18:22 or whatever corresponding scripture that says something is wrong to do or to be. I used to be one of those Christians. That ended when my grandma pointed out something very important that I couldn’t believe I, among so many others, had missed: Nowhere in the Bible does it say that homosexuality, dressing all in black and chains, or showing intense sadness, or what have you is an unforgivable sin. So even if you consider homosexuality, Goths, emos, etcetera, etcetera is a sin, those who have done such things can still ask for God’s forgiveness and receive it.
I’m not a proponent of homosexuality, but I also don’t see a reason to be an outspoken opponent of it. I don’t consider it to be a matter of ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. I believe that there is a genetic and/or neurological circumstance that makes gay people gay. It’s no more their fault than being born autistic is an autistic person’s fault. Why place blame when there isn’t a place to put it?
I gave my friend a pep talk even though he’s a strong person. I just inexplicably felt compelled to do it. I told him to be himself and not let anyone bring him down for it. He’s free to be his own person, as are all other American citizens and everyone on Earth should be. And if he wasn’t himself, then who could he be? Who has the right to beat someone down for being themselves when everyone is unique and imperfect in the first place?
Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. I am not that person. I’ve done countless things throughout my life that have made me far more worthy of having stones thrown at me than for me to throw a stone at someone else, who inevitably would be a sinner no higher or lower, no better or worse than me. There are people in this world who are better than me, holier than me, smarter than me, more pure than me. Nothing gives me the right to throw the dirt-encrusted rock that will stain another sinner’s shirt. Everything warrants me to be the bleach that washes away the dirt on my shirt and other people’s shirts.
Throw a filthy rock at someone, and they will never trust you. Be the bleach, and they will want you to teach them. And I bet they’ll return the favor, too.

Life surprises you! And I'm talking about the good stuff, because a bad surprise is not a surprise at all, it is just shock and horror. All of these good surprises, they are rewards, and the things that happen to remind you that you matter and that you should make yourself faithful so that you can be deserving of all of life's good surprises. Every wonderful surprise in life is a chance to flourish, so grab life by the horns-but don't ride, steer instead: life's horns are life's joystick. You can handle it, because your life's horns are made especially for you. If you don't give up, all of this will hold true and life will continue to surprise you.
