Jenny began,
'Since I produced Horace and Boris, I've wondered whether it's possible to manifest them at will. I know you're the boffin in this area Sara, what d'you think?'
The other woman considered then signed slowly,
'I've studied the Evie bug in people and always assumed that involuntary manifestations as a defence was impossible. This Imp thing is quite recent and goes against everything I've always held to be true. The logical conclusion is that it's always been possible, just covered up.'
Paradox said,
'Yeah but why? And how many people are capable of it? And how is it done?'
'Enough already.' smiled Sara, 'I can only assume that some form of relaxed state will help,'
Jenny slapped the ground excitedly,
'Had a sensei once for karate and he taught me a way of meditating. Wonder if it'll help?'
'Can't hurt.' shrugged Sara.
The others went over to the windows to give her time to induce the necessary state of relaxation.
O'Donnell murmured,
"Wonder what she has in mind?"
"Something devious, if I know Jenny." replied Paradox.
A few moments later, family members of Horace began to materialise. When six had appeared, Jenny opened her eyes and grinned,
'Damn it's so easy,' then she put a hand to her face, 'oh shit - nosebleed.' She pinched the bridge of her nose and leaned forward. Paradox went over to her to help. Eventually the trickle slowed then stopped.
'I want you to be careful Jenny.' remarked Sara, 'tell me if you get any feelings of nausea, headaches or blurred vision.
'Sounds like concussion symptoms - what's the big deal?' Jenny wanted to know.
'Well, you've given your brain out of the ordinary tasks to perform. I'm worried that it might affect you in some way.'
'Jenny, if you've always been able to do this, wouldn't your father know?' asked Paradox.
'Yeah, I see what you mean - probably -why?"
'Could it be why he has been trying to get hold of you? That snatch attempt at the Fortress, then Smith.'
Her eyes widened,
'Bloody hell, no wonder we're being given free passage.'
'So do we take the bait or not?'
This from O'Donnell who was increasingly worried about the idea of walking into a trap.
'No you don't - but I do.'
'No, Jenny, absolutely not.' Paradox had grabbed her arm.
'Don't be stupid, Morris - it makes perfect sense. He'll kill everybody else but he's not gonna hurt me.'
"She's right y'know.' said O'Donnell, 'but in the meantime what do we do?"
Paradox muttered, "Well I don't like the idea of Jenny going in on her own one bit."
Jenny was already making preparations to leave. The others watched uneasily and she signed,
'Stop being such a bunch of fucking wussies, I'll be fine. Don't forget my imps. Anybody starts with me, it's bite first and bugger the questions.'
With that she climbed out of the window and began walking towards the Hill, carefully scanning her surroundings. Her sidearm hung lightly from her hand. Horace and his latest recruits were fanning out to provide flanking cover.
"Well," repeated O'Donnell, "Now what?"
"We follow her of course." said Paradox.
"She'll go bloody crackers." was Sara's opinion before she grinned,
"But she'll be half expecting it anyway."
They gave Jenny a ten-minute start then filed out of the building. From the shadows somebody watched them leave and after a few minutes followed the group.
Paradox led them in silence. She had called him 'Morris' for the first time since she realised his true nature. He was confused by conflicting feelings of pleasure and worry. She was starting to think of him as her former lover again and Paradox was unsure whether he could return her affection.
