01: Little Kitsune Girl...

“Oh God, you didn’t?” Carol giggled out, trying her best not to drop her breakfast pastry. Adrianna held her head high and smirked as if she never smirked before, brushing the falling autumn leaves from her hair.

"I knew you wouldn’t believe me, but it’s true. Derrick totally fucked my brains out last night. That was the best birthday present I’ve ever had!” Carol finished off another mouthful of her pastry before nodding her head in a playful disgust.

"Jesus Christ Adrianna, you're only 16, and that guy's what, 40? There’s like a hundred different guys in school you could have messed around with…You wasted your virginity on some old perv”

"Oh yeah, like I want some high school boy slobbering all over me! And Derrick’s not an old perv, he’s only thirty four!” Carol finished off her breakfast before tossing the wrapper at Adrianna.

"Wow, big difference…Slut!”

"Oh no you didn’t!” Adrianna was about to jump on Carol and tickle her to death, when the sound of a cell phone went off. Being the both had their favorite song as their ring tone, Carol and Adrianna reached into their bags and pulled out their cell phones.

"Hey Derrick! I was just thinking about you, baby,” Adrianna happily squealed while Carol put her own phone away, rolling her eyes with a smile.

"Yeah, I’m cutting right after 4th period…See you later!”

"You’re cutting on the first day of school? Jesus, you want to get held back another grade?” Carol asked, her playful tone waning. Adrianna shrugged her shoulders.

"Oh wow, big frigg’n deal…It’s not like grades are gonna matter once my singing career takes off.” Adrianna put her phone away and walked ahead, with Carol quickly following after.

"Singing career? Since when did you want to be a singer?” Carol asked, catching up. Adrianna turned her head and smiled.

"Derrick says I have a great singing voice. He’s gonna help me put a demo together!”

"And what does a guy who runs a scummy gun shop know about the music biz?” Adrianna nodded her head and smirked.

"Doesn’t matter if he knows anything, as long as he has the money to back me up. And that is all I care about.”

"Obviously…” Carol said, with a bit of disappointment in her voice. Adrianna sensed that disappointment and immediately hugged Carol.

"You worry too Goddamn much, damn! Take the stick out of your ass and have some fun for once? Just for me?” Adrianna playfully fluttered her eyes at Carol, who couldn’t help but smile.

"Alright, alright, I’ll stop nagging…I'm just looking out for you. That damn Daddy complex is gonna get you in so much...What the Hell’s going on over there?”

Adrianna and Carol stopped and stared at the large crowd gathering in the front gate of Robert McCammon High School. A fight has broken out. Adrianna hopped up and down happily.

"Oh yeah, Freshman Day! Let’s go see who’s getting their ass kicked!” she screamed, grabbing Carol’s left hand and dragging her to the crowd. Carol did not much like Freshman Day, since it somehow gave license for seniors to pick on the new students. She herself remembers back when she was a freshman and the beat-down she received.

Pushing their way through the crowd, they found a very small girl in a frilly schoolgirl outfit and short black hair curled up on the ground, while Beth Seager stood over her. Beth was the school’s popular champion soccer player, who loves to fight and is rarely punished for it. It is no surprise she would be one of the first to start bullying freshman. She kicked at the small girl at her feet, brushing back her voluptuous red hair.

”Get the fuck up. Get up now!” she demanded, reaching down and grabbing the freshman off the ground by the hair. Adrianna and Carol were surprised to see a fresh faced Asian girl with an angry look on her face.

”You better get that look off your face, you Jap bitch!” Beth screamed, pushing the girl back down. A blond girl in the crowd stepped forward and grabbed Beth by the right shoulder.

"Why don't you stop this already, Beth. Don't you think she's had enough?" Beth pushed the girl away.

"Stay out of this, Erin, or I'll fuck with you next. Stupid wannabe Alice bitch, who the fuck do you think you are?" The girl named Erin brought up her fists and clenched them. She looked as if she wanted to throw a punch before bringing down her hands.

"To hell with this, I'm getting the security guards," the girl named Erin said before running off in a huff. Beth spun around and held her arms out.

"Anyone else want to be a hero? " Carol began to walk forward, intending to help the girl, when Adrianna held her back.

”What are you doing?” said Adrianna, as Beth kicked the Asian girl in the stomach.

”It’s not right, we should stop this!”

”Stop what? Who cares if that freshman gets beat up?”

Carol stepped into the circle as Beth continuously kicked the Asian girl in the belly. With all the strength she could muster, she pushed Beth away. The crowd of high school students all let out a simultaneous 'oh!'.

”And what the fuck are you doing, bitch?” Beth screamed, running forward and pushing Carol to the ground. Adrianna ran up and tended to her.

”Carol, don’t!” she pleaded, holding Carol back. Beth walked over to the both of them, her six-foot frame casting a statuesque shadow over them.

”Well if it isn’t miss ‘I’m not a fat ugly bitch anymore’ and her pet beaner. Don’t surprise me none you wanting to back up this loser.” Adrianna’s eyes widened, as she stood up furious.

”What the fuck did you just call me, you dumb ass jock?” she screamed, her blood boiling. Beth just smiled before pie-facing Adrianna hard, sending her down next to Carol. The both winced in fear as Beth approached, when suddenly the small Asian girl jumped between them. Beth looked down at her.

”Oh what, you gonna fight back now, you fuck’n rice-chomping-”

Before she could finished her racially insensitive sentence, the Asian girl swiftly kicked her right shin. The crowd gasped as they reacted to the sickening sound of Beth’s shinbone braking in half. She fell forward reaching for her leg, which bent like rubber under the weight of her body. She let out an ear-deafening scream, as the Asian girl stood over her, her face cold and emotionless.

"You're not very nice." the Asian girl said in an almost cold whisper.

The crowd began to scatter as all five of the school’s security officers ran out of the front gates to put an end to the morning’s excitement. Adrianna quickly got up on her feet, while Carol kept her gaze on the girl.

”Carol, c’mon! Get up!” screamed Adrianna, helping Carol off the ground. They then both watched as the Asian girl walked leisurely to her book bag, reached into it, and pulled out a strange fox mask. She put in on and then suddenly disappeared in the fleeing crowd.

”Whoa…” said Carol, trying to see where the girl disappeared.

"I know, what a freak…” Adrianna said, brushing the dust from her backside.

With the ringing of the fourth-period bell, students scurried to their next classes. Carol had decided against her better judgment to tag along with Adrianna on her ‘date’ with Derrick. They hid in the third floor girl’s bathroom until they found an opportunity to make their escape. Once the hallways had emptied of students, they cautiously left the bathroom, took the school’s back stairwell and exited the fire exit. Its alarm had been broken since the spring, making it easy for anyone who wanted to cut class to leave the building. Once they stepped outside, Carol looked about cautiously, hoping there would not be anyone to catch them.

”Isn’t nobody gonna waste their time keeping kids in the school on the first day. Don’t be such a pussy…” lamented Adrianna, pulling out her cell phone. Carol continued to look about.

”I don’t like to cut, okay? Last time I got busted by a truant officer, I got grounded for a month…” Adrianna took the back of her hand and lightly hit the top of Carol’s head.

”The town sheriff and his lackeys are gonna be in the school auditorium all day for the class assembly. There won’t be anyone around to bust us.” Carol cocked her head to one side.

”Why the heck are they here anyway?” Adrianna knocked her on the back of the head once more.

”Don’t be so dense. They want to warn the other kids about all the disappearances over the summer. You know the whole ‘come to school in groups’ and ‘don’t talk to strangers’ speech.” Carol had almost forgotten about what had been going on in town for the last two months. Children and adults of different walks of life had up and disappeared out of thin air seemingly, over thirty of them. Police combed the entire town of Hollow Point, to no avail. Since Carol was away competing in various gymnastics tournaments, she had not really been as affected he news as the rest of the town.

”Hey, stop daydreaming!” said Adrianna, knocking the back of Carol’s head one more time.

”Sorry, I was just thinking about those people missing...Kind of sad, you know?” Adrianna shrugged her shoulders like she didn’t care.

”I guess...All I know is that if anyone messes with me or you, Derrick said he would bust a cap right in their asses!” Adrianna pretended her cell phone was a gun, and pointed at Carol’s butt. Carol quickly covered it up.

”Don’t shoot my ass!”

Just as the both of them giggled their heads off, they heard the sound of something hard hitting the ground near them. When they turned to look, they found the little Asian freshman from earlier sitting on the ground against the back of the school. Her knees curled up to her chest as she just stared out into the forest in front of her. Right next to her was her book bag and the fox mask.

"Holy shit, it’s the freak...” Adrianna whispered, pushing at Carol to move away from the girl. Carol stood her ground.

"We should go talk to her...Cheer her up...”

"Hell no! You don’t know what I heard about her!” Adrianna grabbed Carol by the right arm and dragged her to the furthest corner away from the girl. Although Carol is one of the more prettier girls in school after losing all her weight, she chose not to run with the ‘popular’ girls like Adrianna did. She didn’t like the way they loved to gossip all the time.

"Her name is Tomiko Yamada, who just moved here from Japan or whatver. She lives over at the junkyard near the Backstrom Estate at the edge of town. The principal is suspending her for a whole month for what she did to that jock bitch.”

"Surprised she didn’t get expelled...She must be feeling really down...” Carol still wanted to go over and talk to Tomiko, but Adrianna held her back. Carol turned around and was starting to feel a bit annoyed.

"What is with you today anyway? Why can’t I go to her?”

"Why should you? Why should she get something we never got?” Adrianna referred to their freshman year, when being bullied was a way of life. They had no one to rely on than each other in those dark days. She still had hang ups about it.

"Look at her, she’s all alone. Would it hurt to just-” Adrianna suddenly had a weird look on her face, causing Carol to look and see what she was staring at. Tomiko had disappeared, leaving behind her book bag and fox mask. The both of them called out for Tomiko and waited to see if they would get a reply. After about five minutes, they realized she seemed to be long gone. Carol walked over and picked up the book bag and mask.

"She shouldn’t just leave her stuff lying around like this...” Carol slung the book bag over her shoulder and stared at Tomiko’s fox mask. It seemed to be home made, since there was no manufacturers tag anywhere to be seen. Just as she was going to take a closer look, Adrianna snatched it from her hands and put it on. She bent down on the ground on all fours.

"Hey, look at me, I’m a fox! Yip, yip! Yip, y-” Adrianna suddenly pulled the mask from her face and tossed it to the side, grabbing at her nose and coughing violently. Carol quickly bent down and rubbed her back.

"Fuck, I never smelled anything like that before!” Adrianna screamed, practically choking on her words. Carol helped Adrianna back on her feet.

"What did it smell like?” Carol asked innocently, not wanting to investigate herself. Adrianna gagged for a minute more before gathering her composure.

"Smelled like…like something was dead inside of it...” They looked at each other wearily a few minutes before the sound of a car roared right up to them. Before they had a chance to react, the person inside the old paint-cracked Camaro honked their horn.

"Eh-Yo!” Derrick jumped of the driver’s seat and awaited Adrianna’s usual hug and a kiss. He wore an all leather biker outfit and biker boots, which Carol thought was strange being he was driving a car. She quickly ran up and hugged him tightly, not wanting to let go.

“Damn girl...Stop being so clingy, you just saw me this morning, damn. What’s the matter?”

”I don’t want to talk about it…” Adrianna continued to hug Derrick, who then focused his attention on Carol. She crossed her arms over her breasts, not liking the way he was looking at them.

”You looking mad hot in them clothes, Carol. Something about you jailbaits these days gets my fucking leather pants tight,” he said, licking his lips. Adrianna let go of him and grabbed his goatee, making him look back at her.

”You bastard, hitting on my best friend again?” she said playfully, flicking at his expensive right earring. A big smile came across his face.

”Hey, I never said three’s a crowd, you know what I’m say’n? Maybe her an’ us need to be do’n some three-way dance’n…” Adrianna elbowed him in the stomach and left his arms.

”You touch Carol or any other girl that’s not me, and I’ll tell 5.0. about your birthday gift..” she said slyly. Derrick chuckled nervously under his breath as Adrianna walked over to his car.

”So…Where are we going?” Carol asked, still covering her chest. Derrick rubbed his stomach and gave her a thumb up.

”First, I gotta head over to the old junkyard at the end of town. I got to take care of some new business with the owner there. She’s looking to buy the new set of tazers I just got.” Carol suddenly lit up.

”Hey Adrianna, we could go over and give that girl Tomiko the stuff she left. You said she lives there, right?” Adrianna shook her head and pointed at the mask.

”Hell NO! After smelling that nasty-ass mask, I want nothing to do with that girl!”

”The Hell you both talking about?” Derrick asked, unaware of what just happened. Carol and Adrianna took turns telling him the events of the day.

”Damn, that’s all some fucked up shit. But I don’t see why you can’t take the girl’s stuff to the house. Ya’ll can do that while I deal with her guardian. Everybody wins that way.” Adrianna lowered her head.

”Hey, I don’t win. I don’t wanna go into that house with that girl. I wanna go with you…” Derrick walked over and kissed her on the right cheek.

”Quit your bitch’n. Ain’t like nothing’s gonna happen to ya over there. It’ll only take a few minutes to do what I gotta do, and we can split. Then we can go to that nice diner you like out by the lake.”

“ Oh, really? You gonna buy me and Carol a strawberry banana float, right?” Derrick nodded his head before getting back into his car.

”Sure, whatever. C’mon.” Adrianna happily jumped into the front seat with him, as Carol walked over and picked up the mask. She stared at it a few seconds before joining the others and driving away from the school.

@ Vember
I love both characters, Carol and Adrianna, and the fact that I KNOW something tragic will happen to Carol makes this all the harder to read . . . at least emotionally . . . because I LIKE her.

You're a brilliant writer. Truly.
