I think it's important to understand that the problems facing Obama and the planet are probably fatal.
What do I mean?
Well, for starters let's just look at the ecologial situation. The human race cannot afford to burn fossil fuels anymore. Period and I challenge anyone on this point to argue differently. The industrial mode of economic production is cooking the planet and causing gaian havoc.
Kiss off coal, nuke power, dinosaur juice. Forget it. Yet the USA is still using coal to supply fifty-two percent of American electricity needs. The American car companies are on the verge of being flushed down the toilet. Most Americans have bought their final cars. They just don't know this yet.
China and India are hell-bent on copying this industrial model which is already obsolete in the west. These countries are going to crash even harder.
The US is borrowing money like crazy from China to finance the bank bail-out, oh I forgot---now insurance companies, GM, and states, counties and cities want in on the trough as well. There is no more money and Chinese money is going to get scarce. China is economically tanking and political revolution could break out. I give the Communists zero chance of holding onto power.
I am not optimistic about the short-run. A major global recession has started and monetary deflation is unexpected and also coming towards us at warp speed. This is going to hurt.
By 2012, I see things picking up as a green boom starts in the USA. Obama could ride this boom up if he succeeds in hanging onto power. But a major ecological crash is due by 2040.
So long-term, things are looking very dicey indeed. Of course many of us will be dead by then. But if you have kids or grand-kids that could be a different story for you and for them of course.
The global economy is like an aircraft carrier at sea which is slow at changing change course. Wind and solar power are key now. Forget about bio-fuels. They are no good. They also cause heat and disrupt global food supplies.
Can the aircraft carrier change course in time?
