Summer In The City
Swallowtail butterflies grace a delicate rose
a wispy dandelion wish floated by
Behind the ornate wrought iron fence;
In contrast to the green broken glass
on hot blacktop
Smelling of sweet cheap wine.
A weathered beggar crouched
with cardboard sign scrawled “will work.”
I whisked by with sweaty brow furrowed.
Thirsty children played and fought,
Shaded in the tall doorway
of a brick tenement.
A cabby honked,
Exhaust insulted my lungs;
Wavy designs rose in the air
Off the burning street.
I yearned for cool,
Drenching,
Cleansing,
Rain...
