The Proposal.

A Short Story.

Does he love me….? Will he propose to me……? Or doesn’t he love me….? Won’t he propose to me …..?

These were the thoughts going in her mind. She was toying with her pen thinking all this. Suddenly, the phone started ringing. Someone picked it up and cried her name.

“Yes…?!?” she said, softly, in her sweet voice.

“Hi! Anu, it’s me…Karan..can you meet me at ‘Coffee Day’ at St.Mark’s Road at 5.15 PM ? I have very important thing to discuss with you….What do you say, Anu ?” he asked.

“Ok,” she said, keeping the receiver down.

What could be that important thing be ? So finally, is he is going o propose to me…? She looked at the wall clock and it showed 4.15 PM. She still had one hour left and she could not concentrate on her work now.

She left her office and got into the bus that was moving towards St.Mark’s Road. The Coffee Day was just next to the bus stop. Her father was looking for the suitable boy for her to marry. They had even selected one. But, Anu told them to wait till she made her final decision.

Now, when Karan proposes to her there would be no need for that. She reached the St.Mark’s Road and entered Coffee Day at 5.00 and sat on a chair and waited for him to come.

She was keeping an eye on the wall clock…it showed 5.10 …he should be coming now…5.15 …he will get down from that bus….5.20….may be he will get down from that bus….5.25….perhaps this one…..5.30….5.40….5.45…..why hasn’t he turned up ?….5.55…is something wrong….? 5.58….did he meet with an accident or something….?….6.00…his mother should be terribly ill…..6.05….isn’t he interested in me…?….6.10… I will wait for another five minutes and see…if he dosen’t come then I will think that he is not interested in me and I will leave….6.15..he doesn’t love me….6.20…..so, he won’t come and propose to me….6.25… I would better leave now…..

She took her hand bag annoyed and left the place and got into the bus that was heading towards her home. Just as she got into the bus, Karan got down from the bus that had come meantime in the opposite direction and he rushed towards the ‘Coffee Day’ only to find her gone.

Later, at home :-

“Dad, I’ve decided !” she said, “ I’m ready to marry whomsoever you choose for me.”

“Ok, fine.” He said, “ They are coming at 7.00 to see you. Get ready , you don’t have much time left.”

“You already told them to come ?” she asked, surprised.

Later at 7’ O Clock. The door bell range and Anu went and opened the door and found Karan standing outside. He asked for her forgiveness for coming late to that place where he had asked her to wait. She said that it’s too late now and was about to close the door when her father came.

“Karan, do come in.. Didn’t your parents come along with you ?” he asked.

“Yes, They’ve” he said, moving aside and they both stood behind him.

“Dad ?!?” she asked, surprised, looking at her smiling father.

“Yes, my dear, He is the one whom I have chosen for you. Sorry…I had to read your personal diary…Sometimes…one has to do the wrong thing to do the right thing..” he said, still smiling at her.
