She held onto the robe as she tied herself into it and sighed. Harper’s gaze strayed from William to Samantha as she tied her self into the robe. It gaped open to reveal the rich, deep blue bra he had instructed Adoncia to buy her. It sat better on her than he had intended. He forced his gaze back to William, whose face was as red as his hair. An unusual urge to punch William came forth because he knew what William was looking at. Instead, Harper snapped his fingers in William’s face.
“Excuse me, Harper?” she called, quietly. He looked at her and she motioned to herself. He could not help but smirk at her. “Did you happen to buy any clothes to go with this ever so fabulous lingerie you bought?” Harper feigned forgetfulness and sucked his teeth.
“I knew I had forgotten something. I guess Adoncia will have to buy those tomorrow.” Harper said, without remorse. He was sure if looks could kill, he would be dead. “I guess you’re just stuck in that all night.” Her hands found her hips and she bent one knee.
“What am I supposed to wear?” She asked and he smirked.
“A lot less?” He said and William trained his eyes on his paper as they spoke, in utter silence. Her eyes narrowed to shards of hazel sharp enough to slice someone open. “I have some shirts in my closet. Follow me. William, stay here.” Samantha obeyed and Harper led her into his closet. He pointed to a shelf and said nothing more, leaning on the door, letting it close behind him. She strained to reach the high shelf for a short while before she gave up.
Sam turned to him and his eyes wandered. Her robe had gaped open again and he could see her garter belt. “You knew I couldn’t reach it.” Samantha said and he smirked. He reached over her and pulled it down.
“I still wanted to see you reaching for it.” He handed her the shirt. “It was cute. Do you know your belly’s showing, Sexy?” He said, and she gasped. Samantha clasped the robe shut and pointed towards the door of the closet, asking him to leave. He ignored her and Sam was too stubborn to leave herself. She turned her back to him and slid the robe to her waist. He saw the straps of the rich blue bra on her back and forced himself to bite his lip. He forced himself to only watch her and not trace the soft line of her spine.
He wanted to feel her warmth, pull her close and lose himself in the scent of lavender. It was an insane urge. Even if he was to have her and fulfill his desires, it would have to be later, when he had her alone. She pulled on the shirt and let it fall to her knees as she took off the robe. Harper looked at her in his clothes and felt something new. She belonged in his clothes. She left the closet and they both returned to William. “What did you find, William?”
“Can I look up now? My neck is starting to crick.” William said and she raised his chin with a smile.
“Well, what did you find?” Harper asked and Samantha hit him in the chest. “Tell us.” Harper’s voice was suddenly much less gruff than Will was used to. He gave Sam a small smile before returning to his papers. He laughed, with a wide grin and both faces became a hard as stone as each raised an eyebrow, daring him to comment.
“There are about two thousand ways she could have done what she did. I took the liberty of not even printing a third of those because of her rather obvious strength. That leaves six hundred and sixty seven ways. I put a list on the computer and the classifications are all right here.” William said placidly.
“I’m not a science project.”
“Sorry, I know you’re not. I’m just used to making the entire world one big project. It males it less terrifying, know what I mean?“ Sam shook her head and William laughed. It was a sad, humorless sound. “My world is full of demons and hunters and the fight for good and evil. I spend every day praying my neighbors, my friends, the pissy guy across the street isn’t a demon.”
“Enough of your autobiography, William.”
“Shut your mouth, knight. Let him finish speaking, would you, you pompous ass?”
“Listen here, woman. You do not give any orders around here.”
“I’ll stop giving orders when you let me go. Until then, you are going to have to chill out. You’re an overbearing bastard! You can not control everything.” She walked forward, just a few inches, until her mouth was next to his ear. “You can’t hide behind that stoic mask for all eternity, knight.”
Behind her glare, Sam was terrified of Harper. He looked outraged enough to hit her. He leaned down and whispered in her ear. “I can smell your fear. I can hear your pulse racing. Next time, you want to tell me something or upset me, remember this.” Sam clenched her jaw and continued to stare into those angry grey eyes.
“Hit me.” She demanded and he pulled away a bit, obviously startled by her demand. “You want me to fear you, beat me. If you’re expecting me to cower before you, you’ll have to give me a reason.” She demanded and he glared at her as her silent hazel eyes searched him for her answer. He wondered why he had not hit her. It would take very little to make her cower and fear him. He wouldn’t have to use any force, but he had not hit her. She was testing him, pushing him. What frightened him was that he liked it. He liked to be challenged. In over a thousand years, she was the only person to ever do so.
“Tread lightly woman.” He said and felt her fear decline a bit as she stepped forward, into him once more. She looked up at him, eyes honest and gentle.
“I would never, knight. What fun would that be?” Behind the curtain of hair, she touched the corner of his mouth and he forced himself to ignore the softness of her caress. “You see, I’ve never agreed with the need to be careful.” She retrieved her hand reluctantly as a small smirk played on her lips. “I’ll take the risk. Wouldn’t you?” He bared his teeth and bit the air before her. She returned the gesture and he fought the confusing urge to kiss the impertinent woman.
“You were saying Will?” She asked, suddenly, looking around him and acting as if he did not exist. Harper suddenly remembered that they were not alone and that this confrontation was best saved for later. Harper turned to William, whose bright eyes were wide as they fleeted between Harper and Samantha, waiting for one of them to explode. “Don’t worry Will. All is well, for now.” Samantha said, the last words of her sentence dripping with venom.
“Nothing. I’m just going to head home, if no one objects. Please, don’t object.” Samantha smiled and nodded at him. Will looked at Harper, who didn’t respond. Samantha shook his shoulder and Harper nodded stiffly. Will returned the nod, then gave Samantha a small smile and asked if there was anything she needed. Samantha shook her head, with a gentle smile. She paused, then nodded.
“Actually, please go to P3 and tell the manager I will be in to work tomorrow at nine.” Harper raised a brow and neither of his guests took any notice. Samantha entranced William with the soft, comforting way she had about her. She hugged the man and smiled, as William left the room, smiling as well. Harper crossed his arms and furrowed his brow, trying to remember a time in recent history when he had seen William smile.
Samantha tried to slip away from Harper and he caught her by her waist. She glared up at him and he spoke gently. “There seems to be something we need to clear up, sexy.” She nodded hard and Harper continued. At least on this they could agree. “You’re a very hard headed woman and you’re too damn bold for your own good.” Samantha smiled as f her was complimenting her and he didn’t understand it. “You seem to regard me as the same, and a bit overbearing. Still, there is something about you that interests me, despite the fact that you do not know what is good for you.”
“You’re an ass hole. Bite me, okay?” Samantha said harshly and he smirked.
“Don’t tempt me. I have to go to work. I’ll be back in a few hours. Try not to burn my house down in my absence.” Harper said, turning away. Samantha followed him down the hallway and when he opened the door, she ran out, dashing under his arm. Before she could get thirty yards, she felt arms like a bear trap close on her waist. She was lifted off the ground as she screamed. He covered her mouth and carted her back into the house, closing the door with his foot and dropping her among the cushions of his couch. “Have you lost your damned mind?”
“I just want to go home. Don’t you get that?” Sam asked and Harper nodded. He knew the misery of wanting nothing but to go home and being detained instead. He hated that feeling and as he saw what it was doing to Samantha, he hated it more. “Then, why won’t you let me just go to my house? Can’t you protect me there?” Harper did not enjoy the pain in her eyes as she looked up at him. She lowered her head and ran a hand through her hair.
“Come here.” He said, pulling her by her wrist. She looked up at him as he dragged her up the stairs. He led her into his room, then the bathroom, opening a drawer and pulling out a leather band with a flat, silver clasp. “You can go and get what you need from your home, but you have to wear this. You will not be able to run away from me. If you disappear, I will track you. No one can take this off but me, do you understand?” Samantha smiled and, to his surprise, pounced on him, arms encircling him.
Her soft lips landed on his check, and then she pulled away and looked up at him. His silver-grey eyes looked confused, but pleased. She kissed him again, this time he turned his head and his lips found hers, as his arms encircled her waist and pulled her close. She shivered and pressed herself against him, feeling his hard chest through his thin shirt and the lingerie he had bought. His tongue begged passage and she allowed it, smiling softly. His hands slid down to her hips, pulling her hips to his as she pulled away a bit and looked up at him. “Thank you.”
Harper nodded as he looked down at Samantha. He vowed to do more things she liked, so long as this was the payoff. He placed the small black leather band on her neck and smacked her ass as she looked up at him. “Get on the damned bike before I change my mind.” Harper said, placing the matching band on his wrist. She made her way to her room and he grabbed her wrist, leading her back to the steps.
“I can’t go like this. Can I at least put on my clothes from before?” Samantha asked and he shook his head, reaching into her room and picking up her boots. He placed her on the chair on the platform in front of the steps and placed the thigh high boots over her royal blue stockings. His hand massaged her shin as he zipped up the boot and she didn’t object, watching him. After he placed on the second boot, she bit her lip and he smirked.
