She looked up at him, confused, and he brushed the long hair from her face and smiled, happy to finally share this place. He trusted her not to divulge his secret because he could see in her eyes she too had been betrayed. He walked through the trees and she looked at his sanctuary. Her eyes went wide and for a short moment, she was speechless. Her eyes wandered the field that backed up to a cliff face and a small waterfall that emptied into a beautiful lake. “Now, about that shower.” He said, walking towards the lake.

“No! Colton, don’t you dare. Colton!” She shouted at him, letting go of his neck and pushing against his chest. He held her closer spitefully as she beat on his chest. When they made it to the waterfall, he was waist deep in water. Instead of just placing her in, he turned around and backed into the waterfall so he could see her reaction. The cold water cascaded over her and she screamed out his name.

Her chest collided with his as she clung to him in an attempt to keep warm, setting him ablaze. He had been able to avoid his more wicked thought all day, but that set him over the edge. Suddenly, he wanted her to scream his name again. He dove under the water and when he came to the surface, she screamed again. “Colton, stop it!” she shrieked and he could hear the smallest hint of laughter in her voice, then again, he could be imagining it. “Get me out of this water!” There it was again. He wasn’t imagining it, even if it was despite herself, she was enjoying this.

With a hidden smirk, he walked out of the water and sat her on a small boulder. He stripped off his pants and waited for her to follow. She scoffed, then removed her top and he shrugged. “It’s about to get very cold.” A confused look crossed her face and he didn’t give her time to speak. He sent a chilling gust of wind at her and she bit her tongue, bearing it in silence as she was dried off. She shivered and he dried himself quickly before coming to her side.

She turned her face, cheeks red, as he sat next to her on the boulder. “Come now, let me warm you.” He said and she shook her head. He turned to her, sliding his legs under hers and pulled her into his lap gently as she fought not to gasp. He pulled her against his chest and she tried to pull away, rubbing her arms. She did not need to be nurtured by some man she hardly knew. His warm arms slid against her exposed waist and he held her tight, placing his chin in her hair.

The gesture unsettled her and for a moment, she did not move. She did not understand what was happening. She wrapped her arms around his waist and placed her head in the cradle of his neck. His head slid against her neck and down to the cradle of hers. She felt his body, his strength surround her and she let it envelop her. A hand strayed up her back, comfortingly, and she shivered. “You’re still cold?” She shook her head, and then stopped. She truly did not feel cold. She did not feel her normal detached distaste for everything around her. “Ryesen?”

“No, I’m not cold right now.” She said finally and he shrugged, squeezing her waist gently. The fearie felt so good against his bare skin. The feel of her skin amazed him as he held her. She was softer than the finest fabric. His hand slid farther up her back, to rest at the base of her shoulder blades. His fingers traced her spine and she shivered in his lap. He smirked and brought his fingers slowly down her spine, starting at her neck and stopping just above her bottom, enjoying how she writhed in his arms.

“Stop it.” He looked up innocently and she didn’t buy it. She raised her eyebrows and he sighed, giving in. If that was what she truly desired for the moment, so be it. He laid her down on the rock and pulled away, standing. She closed her eyes and rolled her neck gently. For a few moments, he simply watched her laying there, tracing the lines of her body with his eyes, attempting to control his thoughts and failing miserably.

“Ryesen? Ryesen, where are you?” A voice called and she sat up. Colton put on his pants quickly as she looked at him, panic clear in her face. She was forced to wait on him to finish dressing before he picked her up. “Princess, please answer me!” the voice called and Colton stopped, looking down at her. The fearie rolled her eyes and nodded, she motioned towards the trees as the sound of thick, heavy wing neared.

“Come no closer, Kendrik.” She said firmly, in the voice of a commanding ruler. The wings beat again and annoyance crept into hr voice. “I said no closer, Kendrik.” The wings stopped. Colton flew to the fearie knight and saw the knight inspect him as the knight spoke.

“You did not arrive to lunch, my lady.”

“I will arrive when I am hungry, Kendrik, you know that.” She said, matte- of-factly.

“Of course, my liege. Please, forgive my impertinence.”

“I will not forgive what does not exist. I will see you later, Kendrik.” She said and the knight bowed respectfully. Kendrik left and Colton looked down at her, with a mean smirk.

“That explains a lot.” Colton said and she huffed before he took off. They flew over the forest and she looked up at him. He could feel her silent question: Why didn’t we do this the first time? He ignored it and simply flew them to the lunch hall. She led him to a group of people standing near the door, looking as if they were waiting for someone. As he approached, they stood at attention.
“Who is the elf?” One of the faeries asked gruffly. The boy had deep brown hair and eyes who only stood a lanky five nine. A long scar covered the right side of his face, making him look dangerous. Even with the scar, Colton was sure if he so desired he could break the impertinent boy’s neck with one hand.
“He is none of your concern.”
“Why is he carrying you?”
“Did you fall and smack your little head? I said he is not your concern. Now, which part are you having difficulty with?” Ryesen asked harshly and the boy fell to one knee. “Your wound has not healed yet?” She asked in a more gentle tone.
“I apologize for my questions, they were out of line.” The boy said and another helped him back to his seat. He ignored all mention of his injury as he sat.
“Now, I know every one is curious about the elf. I was shot this morning, courtesy of….” Ryesen paused, realizing she had no idea who had shot her.
“Ashburn.” Colton interjected and all eyes turned to Ashford. “He was attempting to improve his aim.”
“Impossible. My brother is a very good shot.” Ashford protested and Colton raised a skeptical eyebrow. If Ashburn was a good shot, Colton had yet to see it. “You’re Colton, aren’t you?” Colton nodded and Ashford shrugged. “That explains that. Many times, my brother has told me he can not shoot in front of you. You make him nervous, you know that? ” Again, Colton nodded.
“It’s good for him. He needs to get used to being under pressure. Without that, he will not be able to function in any battle.” Colton said and Ashford said nothing. After a short moment, Ashford nodded, and Ryesen sighed impatiently.
“Have we reached our macho posturing quota for the day?” Ryesen said and no one responded. “Good, now, back to business. You all know that our proceedings are becoming more and more urgent by the day.” Colton turned unexpectedly and she looked up at him. “Excuse me?”
“Listen, I don’t know what you’re doing, but I heard the word urgent. Urgency leads to stress. Stress means slow healing.” Colton said quietly and she shrugged. “I know how much you hate having to depend on me, so we’re going to avoid the word urgent.”
“I never said that.” Ryesen protested in an equally quiet tone. This man’s impertinence knew no bounds. She truly should have him struck down, but he was trying to help her. What was wrong with her? She had put people in dungeons for less. Colton raised an eyebrow and she tilted her head in irritation. “I never said that.”
“So, tell me you don’t mind.” She huffed again and he turned back to the others.
“I am hungry and my leg is hurting again. We will have to meet later.” She crossed her arms and her knights began to move forward. She waved a hand in dismissal and they hesitated before leaving Colton and Ryesen.
“To lunch then, my pretty, pretty princess.” Ryesen turned away from him, hiding behind her hair. She could not let him see her blush so vividly. His voice was softly, gently mocking her, but oddly affectionate. She simply demanded they hurry up and finish lunch.
It seemed to Colton that after this incident, Ryesen had reached her limit and would not be tolerable. Everything he said, she contradicted. Some how, she found fault with his every move. At the end of the day, he threw open the door to her dorm room and tossed her onto her bed. She shrieked and glared at him. “What the hell is wrong with you? Have you lost your mind?”
“No. You are simply an overbearing, insufferable, abrasive, dogmatic, caustic woman.” He said, at his wit’s end with her. He could strangle her. After what he had endured, attempting to help her, he could do more than that.
She scoffed at him. “When it’s a woman, it’s caustic. When it’s a man, it’s authoritative.”
“No, even if a man behaved like you, he would considered be caustic. You would make quite a boorish man.”
“If I was a man, I would not need you and furthermore, if I was a man, you would not speak to me the way you do, you impertinent, cheeky, ill-mannered cad.” She shot back. She could have him hung for the way he behaved. More than that, he knew he spoke with such disdain to a princess, no less. If she had two brain cells, she would call her knights on him. She could have his head mounted on a wall.
“You contrary, argumentative, belligerent woman...” Colton growled out and could not finish the thought. She twisted him in ways he had not imagined. Much less would he have thought he would continue to tolerate anyone who tied him that way. Never had he willingly gone back to such unnecessary torment time and again. Yet, he sat with the wicked faerie through each class and carried her, griping at him. All but ready to show her why none dared treat him the way she did; he stomped onto the bed and walked across it, until he stood over her. He dropped to his knees and her only response was a small, almost imperceptible twitch.
“You argumentative, wicked faerie.” He said, leaning over her, hands by her head
“You already said argumentative.” She said her voice barely above a whisper.
“I can not think clearly. You confuse me, tie my mind in knots.” Colton said, his voice lowering he leaned down, eyes on her beautiful pink lips. His mouth begged for hers, wondering if she would feel as soft as he thought. Would her kiss have as much fire as her words? “I do not understand you, you detestable little princess.” He said, as he leaned down. Whether or not she tried to speak, he didn’t know. He needed an answer to his silent question.
His mouth took hers and he could not breathe. She was so soft. She tasted like heaven and he wanted more. He bit her soft, sweet lip as her fire burned his throat. His body lowered down, over hers and he buried his hand in her hair. He had never tasted a girl like this. He kissed her deeply and tried to contain himself. It was a hard feat, seeing as her soft, inviting, voluptuous body was pressed against his
She couldn’t breathe as he kissed her. She felt like she was being assaulted in the most enjoyable way she had ever known. He attacked her senses, teased her with his gentle kisses, and his body pressed against hers. Against her better sense, her hand slid up, over his shoulder. His body was warm, hard, and sensuous against hers. Keeping her head was getting harder and harder every second his lips were against hers. He pulled away and she forced herself not to chase his lips with hers.
“That’s not what I meant to do…” Colton said as his lips hovered above hers, taunting them both. “, but I think it was one of my better ideas.” Ryesen only nodded as he sat up, then pulled his finger across the soft, blood filled lips and smirked at his handy work. Yes, he was very pleased indeed. If for just a moment, the belligerent faerie was struck silent.
“Get up. I have to call Kendrik.” She said her voice airy. Colton climbed up off of her and she called her knight. She told him to bring Colton clothes each night for every day he would be there. After that, Colton looked at her silently from a chair across the room. “You should sleep on the couch.” She said, unable to look him in the eyes. Colton gave a small smirk before pulling a pillow off her bed and lying on the floor next to her bed. Only after he heard the quiet purring he could tell was her sleeping did he let hat odd mix of fire and roses envelope him and lull him to sleep.
