Gather Cowboys
The best players
around
It’s time that I
Welcome you
Horseshoes Inn

I’m sorry but
The dealers gone
Y’all raised the
Stakes so high
It’s play
Or die

But I survive
So too
The cards
The chips
The ante
The money in
Your wallets

I guess I never realized
I was what lay on the table

Indestructible
Insurmountable
But inexistence
Without the play

I met a gypsy once
Who showed me
Another world of games

I was sure this realm
Would grant me
A better fate

God
How wrong I was

The only winner here
Is the one who doesn’t
Play

If I could only find someway
To melt the hearts the clubs
The diamonds and spades

Anything to make me feel like
I separated myself
From the game

But the magician
I see is rising
On the horizon

His is not a game
My only worthy contender
Holding the attention
Of the ranchers
And ethnic travelers

Maybe the magician
Can save me

We’ll see when
He checks in

------
"If you get a feeling next time you see me
Do me a favor and let me know
'Cos it's hard to tell
It's hard to say
Oh well, okay"
Elliott Smith

"The only winner here..."
those are my favourite three lines here, largely 'cause they sum up my own rather cynical world view... those lines could be talking about life… and I think they are…

kept imagining this set to music, has the cinematic/ allegorical feel and scope of a Dylan or Waits song, wry and weary in tone… loved the voice of this, both jocular and little sinister. would be interested to hear about the inspiration for this. good to read you.

Auld & Des
thank you for sharing....and yes all of my writing is autobiographical so it is all life related lol
the inspiration for this piece?? well i was stuck in traffic and letting my mind soak in all the shock of my day...the feeling that so many ppl want some part of me and i'd be glad to share but i'm not interested in any sort of EXCHANGE
the first idea was that of a poker game texas hold 'em and cowboys....caause i love the cowboys lol....and so naturally i would be the playing cards
then when i actually got to writing...the gypsy/fortune telling came...and then after more sitting and thinking ...the magician came lol

I actually dont feel i observe very much....i think im more analytical in all things relating to me lol
if i were more observant i think id be writing about more wordly things...instead of just me myself and I

oh well
thanx for reading and commenting!!
i always appreciate your comments
