"The sun is up, the birds do sing,
My love why do you leave?"
"Anchor is up, my mates do sing,
My love, 'tis time to leave.

For time ebbs like the tide by which the ship
At her mooring strains and moans for spray."

"But if you go, what shall I do,
My love when you are gone?"
"When I have left, sing for me true,
My love when I am gone.

And yet tide floods and yet the stream runs free
And so one day I shall return to you"

"My love, why do we play in rhyme,
So soon before you go?"
"My love, there is so little time
Verse lights our love aglow

When home I come from sea and sun and mist
I shall seek soft shelter in your arms"

"So kiss me then, and hold me fast,
Dear, let our lips not part"
"I'll kiss you, love, and hold you fast,
But dear, our lips must part.

Dearest, we should surely starve to death,
If our lips caress'd and touch'd forev'r!"

"And might you choose another boat?
Love, leave some other hour!"
"Suppose I chose a diff'rent boat,
And raised a diff'rent bower?

T'would but delay the hour I depart
And dawn is not more difficult than noon.

When safely in your arms I rest
Again I shall never roam
And I will burn my old sea chest
To stay with thee at home."

"Then you and I will sit with stately fire
And happy for a time indeed we'll be.

But petrel will call and sea will rear,
Your heart again will pull.
For southern stars you'll wish to steer.
And I'll knit thee cap of wool.

For I accept that you will roam from here
We both accept that it will break our hearts.

And when shrouds freeze and with ice cake
My cap shall keep you warm"
"And if it from me the sea doth take
I shall not feel the storm.

Suffice it would to know that I was loved
Even though my love was from me gone."

"So kiss me once, and leave me dear,
To your boat you go.
For me shed a single tear,
No more than one do show.

Lover, if you did not leave me here
My only love you would not be - now go!"

Voyage's Dawn
I like the push and pull rhythm of this, almost like a boat straining at anchor, and it comes perfectly packaged in a form that recalls old seafaring ballads, with the right word choices to evoke bygone days. in short, this is a very skilfully put together poem, and the last two lines were a nice touch, made me smile… reminded me of The Nantucket Girl’s Song:

“Then I'll haste to wed a sailor and send him off to sea
For a life of independence is the pleasant life for me
But every now and then I would like to see his face
For it always seems to me to beam with a manly grace
With his brow so nobly open and his dark and kindly eye
Oh my heart beats fondly towards him whenever he is nigh
But when he says goodbye me love I'm off across the sea
First I cry for his departure then I laugh because I'm free…”

I like being reminded of that song, it's a good un. hope to read more by you soon, good stuff. welcome to Lit.

Voyage's Dawn
Love everything about this. The love story and the sea story. And when you have a love story where one of the loves is the sea, well it's just great.

"the ship
At her mooring strains and moans for spray."

Awesome, like a living beast crying to be free. I'm actually sad for the ship. Robert.
