(My first and last Sestina)
The mansion stood upon the shadowed hill:
a dark and gloomy massive place.
Many years it stood in emptiness,
said to be an evil haunted house.
No one entered because of the curse:
"All who enter, will remain forever."
Seems the mansion has been standing forever,
built by the Cherrys of Chester Hill.
The family was under a long-time curse;
massive yard turned to a barren place...
Darkness then spread into the house:
rooms filled with unfathomable emptiness
built for Maria, eyes wide with emptiness.
Word has it she will dwell there forever...
She searches for others to lure into the house,
that monstrous, evil house on the hill.
All cross the road to stay clear of the eerie place,
afraid the air around it is poisoned with the curse.
Maria Cherry's blindness was her terrible curse:
shell of a woman , heart echoing emptiness,
bored and unloved , she despised this place.
She felt like a prisoner, banished. Forever
alone in her ivory tower, on that somber hill.
A hermit's existence in that gloomy house.
No patter of children's footsteps in the dusty, old house:
being childless was part of her curse.
Nothing could live or prosper on that depleted hill...
Destined to be alone and live in emptiness:
this was her fate in life, blighted forever.
She turned to the darkness inhabiting the place.
Her young husband built the place;
died before he could finish the house...
She never remarried, stayed widowed forever.
Living in sorrow and loneliness was her curse:
no more to love or be loved, filled with emptiness;
never to hear the laughter of children on Chester Hill.
Beware that fallow hill and evil house!
Enter not the emptiness of that dark place
or you will remain there forever, under the curse.
