How disappointing.
I speak of course of the recent revelation that the mighty guitarist of the legendary rock band The Who is a pedophile.
I grew up listening to this guy - not as often as Tony Iommi of Black Sabbath, but fairly often and I always respected his work - and now, after he's built one of the greatest of rock'n'roll legacies, we had to discover this. I almost wish he'd been more discreet than to use his credit card to visit the kiddie porn site where they nabbed him.
I'm all for stomping on kiddie porn, however, and if ol' Pete has to go down with the rest... so be it, Who or no Who. And on top of all of that, I know I can never listen to any of that music with the same feeling of youthful innocence or empowerment again. All those songs are destroyed for me now.
When I first saw the headline, I cried out loudly in despair. It's one of the few times that I've ever responded to a news article emotionally. I wanted to go to England and hang him in front of his family, as if the slow death would purge him of the guilt and save the legacy of his music.
I had long suspected that he'd been molested as a child, so I have no problem believing his claims in that regard, considering the content of the one song on'Tommy' regarding the pervert uncle 'fiddlin' around'. If that's what drives him to what he's gotten himself into, then I have slightly more sympathy for him than I would otherwise, since I know this perversion leads often to the creation of more of this kind of criminal.
I wonder what Kieth Moon would have said about it, and if he would have been as positive as Roger Daltrey. I wonder what Entwhistle would've said. It's too bad for Townshend and his legacy - and that of the entire Who - that he didn't pass instead of Entwhistle. That way, even if he's been doing this all this time, we wouldn't have known about it and he'd certainly have stopped doing it.
Perhaps I'm being hard on him, but at least I can promise you that I don't actually intend to go to England and hang him in front of his family.
This is the second time in recent years that I've lost something I cared about because of this pedophilia phenomenon. First it was the Catholic Church. And now -
The Who is dead... to me.
