I just saw 'Notes on a Scandal', with Cate Blanchett and Judi Densch.

I must say, it was a great show. What kind of movie is it? What kind of genre would describe it? Well, I guess I would have to call it either black comedy or psychodrama - not that anyone dies, but it definitely raises your level of concern.

It also illustrates the character of the British school system. Holy moley, it's in a shambles - although I'd read that previously. They have uniforms, but the kids are still raising hell and going nuts. I would never want to teach there, no more than I'd want to go back to teaching here. What a mess.

The story is based loosely on that of Kathy LeTourneou (I might have spelled that incorrectly), who committed a similar criminal offense years ago in the midwestern USA. This one's set in contemporary Britain.

This movie has enough taboo-breaking to go around for everybody. It also has a very fetching shot of Cate Blanchett on the porcelain throne, sexy bare-legged. Ooh, yeah. I bring great evil, thong-wearer! (evil grin)

I'll have to see Pan's Labyrinth next. I had intended to watch two movies today, but I don't have enough energy.

In any case, I do highly recommend 'Notes from a Scandal', with five stars. It will certainly keep your attention.

Thanks very much for this review.I think you are referring to Mary Kay Letourneau , ironically the daughter of flaming supremacists , who eventually ended up marrying the man.

And yes, the school system is clearly getting from bad to worse.There are no disincentives or impediments to bad behaviour . The authorities can't-or seem forbidden to - lift a finger to stem the rot.

It shouldn't therefore, come as any surprise that ghastly incidents like Columbine -the natural end-product of such a societal break-down-will keep recurring.

Thanks for your correction - yes, I was sure I had the name incorrect. Also, her brother had a hands-on affair with her throughout their teens, I read.

Additionally, I myself am a high school teacher, and have resigned my position because of the 'rot'. Tomorrow is my last day, in fact.

In a testosterone-charged ethos ,teen sex between siblings ,fathers raping their minor children- to say nothing of paedophlia -should be about par for the course.

Re.your resignation ,i guess felicitations are in order -given that you've finally made it back from the wars.I'm told that in the US going to school is supposed to be as dangerous as being a coal-miner in China.

But isn't this to be expected in a culture that 'spares the rod and spoils the child '; a culture where a teacher is less than the dirt under the students' feet.

All this in stark contrast to Eastern traditions where teachers ( gurus) are venerated by their students ( shishyas) for the wisdom , accumulated over a lifetime , that they impart.
