Bland. James Bland.
I went to the new James Bond film, 'Die Another Day' last weekend. I've enjoyed Piece Brosnan's previous outings as Bond, and I'd been looking forward to this one for some time. I'm afraid to say that I was dissapointed.
I'm not saying it's a bad film. It's just that the hype was that they were doing something special for the twentieth Bond, and I'm afraid it just doesn't live up to my expectations.
There were some excellent action sequences - the final one for example, in the Korean aircraft, is classic Bond - but there were also some that just didn't work: The sword-fight scene was seriously over-acted, and the scene where Bond surfs among the icebergs simply doesn't look real and is, frankly, disappointing.
I wanted to add a big thumbs-down for the title theme song as well. I'm sure there are plenty of people who liked it, and music is a matter of taste, but I hated it. That said, it's not enough on it's own to detract from the film.
Back to the film itself. The plot does have some originality, but I felt that a lot of the key plot elements seem to have been blatantly stolen from previous Bond films. A device that collects the sun's rays and concentrates them into a devatstating weapon...? Anyone remember 'The Man With The Golden Gun'?
But the thing that really killed it for me was the sex. I know James Bond is supposed to be a womaniser, but this time it went over the top. He meets Jinx, they utter a couple of suggestive one-liners, and jump into bed. At this point he doesn't know that she's also an agent; he's simply after the sex (and presumably, so is she). In most Bond films he at least has the decency to seduce them for a reason (trying to get information, winning over the enemy, or whatever), but here the motivation is simply self-gratification; it was completely shameless. Maybe they were trying to make him more human, but for me it spoilt the image of Bond.
So yes, there are some good points, and anyone who enjoys good action sequences should have plenty to get their teeth into. But in the long line of Bond films, this will definitely go down as one of the weaker ones.
