Ma went to town for groceries. I took our ladder, leaned it on the eave of the house, climbed up on the roof.

had my cape on
got to the top
of the roof
had to talk to Superman
(he flew up beside me)
I gotta' fly like you Superman
I know, he says.
I ask him, how do you like my cape?
(old sheet, red crayola crayon S on the back)
it's big enough, he says.
(Superman talks just like me)
you got any advice?
yeah, he says, take off is everthing
make sure you leap
I walk to the edge
look down
it sure is a long way down Superman
don't look down, william, he says
Will you fly with me? I ask
sure, he says
I take off runnin'
across the roof
leap
Superman is next to me
for a second
I hit the ground
hard
bite my lip through
(bleeds a lot)
feet hurt
don't know why
cape's dirty
chokes me
get up
climb back up
the ladder
Superman's
waitin' for me
sit down next to him
how come I didn't fly, Superman?
Superman ain't talkin'

Ma come home later
I got a whippin'

(Superman don't cry)

I always knew
william was a smart kid. Ordinary kids pick blobs for imaginary friends. This kid picks Superman. Smart kid. Especially knowing there's no such thing as imaginary kryptonite, eh?
I love this as much as all the others. "Superman don't cry" is every bit as important a realization as those Pa makes...

Powerful stuff
This is a really heartbreaking bit of writing, William. It's elegent and surprisingly subtle, and man could I feel that kid. Brilliant, brilliant work.

Superman
Wow. Brings it home, doesn't it? I still have dreams I can fly. Children are so vitally innocent - they look for heroes they can emulate. Not so when they reach "maturity" - when they feel they themselves are the supermen and superwomen.

This is a charming piece of prose...

Superman
Thanks to you all for commenting. I just thought everyone jumped off the roof at one time or another. it was great to have Superman with me.
