Spiderman 2- The Review
By G.S.Vasukumar
"Spiderman, Spiderman, friendly neighborhood Spiderman..."The song used to be heard from all most all television at 12.30 PM every Sunday, when I was a kid. I used to eagerly wait for the sunday to come so that I could watch 'Spider man' cartoons on television. That nice song finds its way into "Spider Man-2". It reminded me those wonderful days gone by...Even my mother remembered those days...
Your friendly neighborhood Amazing Spider Man returns in the sequel to fight a new villian with metal tentacles called "Octavius". I think he is one of the best villians of the spiderman series of those days.... Like Lex Luthor is in Superman comics...
Tobey Maguire returns back to play the duel role of that of Peter Parker and Spiderman. Parker can't keep down a job, his grades are slipping, and he is on the verge of losing Mary-Jane [ MJ, for short ] and he is consumed by loneliness. Yes, no matter how many people surround our lives, we are still alone...do you agree ?
Meanwhile Dr Octavius, his mentor, suffers a lab accident and turns into a potential monster. Both Dr Octavius and Parker are common. Both are geniuses who lost father figures at an early age. Both acquire supernatural powers by chance. But the main difference is that one turns a hero and the other the villian. They are two sides of the same coin.
We are made to remember the famous line of the first instalment "with great power comes great responsiblity".
That scene when Parker has to deliver the Pizzas and time is runing out. So he becomes Spider Man to save his job was really funny. Someone shouts "He stole that guy's pizzas!"
I think 'Sam Raimi' is the perfect director for the Spider Man instalments. As well as , Tobey is the perfect match. We cannot think of anybody else...I loved Micheal Keaton as Batman than anybody else...Similarly no one can play another Super Man....Christopher Reeve is the ultimate Superman that comes to my mind.
Coming back to 'Spider Man', Well, it's really very touching to see 'Spider Man' lose his powers all of a sudden, and dump his custome in a garbage can. If I am right, this also happened to 'Super Man' in the comics. We have grown up seeing Hereos win and not loose...It is touching when Hereos stand tall but yet loose.. Fortunately Spidey loses his powers and gets back the same when he is hit hard. Hereos come from the dust. That was the title of the story, which I didn't write.
It's hard to manage single life itself. Then Peter has two lives..He misses many things being 'Spider Man'. For others, he is itelligent, but lazy. What they don't know is the secret he is hiding..big secret....which is revealed to a group of commuters in a speeding train, when he tries to stop the train, removes his mask, in the process. He becomes unconcious and the commuters take him in. When he regains his conciousness and realises he isn't wearing his mask, they assure him that they will keep his identity a secret. According to me, it is one of the best scenes of this movie.
Even convincing the bad guy "Octavius" about the distruction and making him do one last good...was also one of the best scenes....it has a hidden message too. No one is created or born good or bad by nature. While it is just the circumstances and the choices we make that make us behave is such way, which could be interpreted as either good or bad by others. It is the choice whether we let the angel in us rule our mind or the sleeping beast...However, the choice is ours! That shows when the "Octavius" shouts aloud "I don't want to die as a monster!" No one wants to be a monster..Everyone one of us wants to be an angel..
Another best scene was when Parker speaks to MJ's anwering machine [ phone]...he reveals his other identity when the time is up...I just rewinded the CD to see it again. I just wanted to see whether MJ's anwsering machine had recorded that last few lines or not...Maybe that scene was put to make the viewers beleive that MJ may get to know his other identity through that answering machine later. But it is not so.
But the most eagerly waited part of this instalment is whether MJ finally gets Parker or not in the end or will Parker utter those famous line " with great power comes great responsibility" the lines from the end of first instalment once agian. I am not going to tell whether Parker gets MJ or not ? See it for yourself.
I am eager to know who will be the new villian in the next 'Spider Man' adventure ? The songs in the movie are nice too. Anyway, watch it with your family members and kids and you will have a nice time.
