hanging above me, he knows everything.
witness to my addiction since the beginning,
a borrowed icon complete with warning
twenty stories up in a foreign language.
his stetson professional, the desert behind him mythical.
his breath distant whisky and smoke
this station beneath him more the object
than the disease he sells, less the point
than other diseases down below
in the waiting of people on each other
on their slow negotiations, pointless
angers, their words dim or clever
uttered for effect.

I am his object;
at that moment where I have nothing left to say,
he is my witness.

I'd rather have permanent employment than be called fascinating

Signage...
Been there, done that...
Quit in '83...
My favorite line...
"his stetson professional, the desert behind him mythical."
Though I must admit, even living in the Desert Southwest most of my life, I've never seen that "professional stetson" as it were. Now that desert truly is mythical as well as mystical...

This makes me feel as though I'm on the street observing what you describe...

Very Well Done...
