When The Rains Fell
With alacrity and joy the parched grasses drank.
Daisies stretched their thin green necks toward the sky.
Clumps of monkey faced pansies in yellow and purple smiled,
Knowing their little whimsical faces would delight again.
Fir, cedar, hemlock, sequoia,
Stood tall and majestic waving their mighty boughs.
The red soil and moss beds beneath let off a pungent scent.
Tall fern drew their lacy swords and challenged the heat to return.
The spindly legged fawn twists and jumps in play,
Mother’s big brown eyes smiled, ears forward always watching.
In the city children laugh as they splash in oily rainbow colored puddles.
The air is cleaner now and congested lungs breath deeper.
Steamy asphalt smells greet nostrils as the thunder peels a hardy hello.
Tires spin as if on ice from light to light, noisy grating horns honk.
Business suits are fleeing from door to door as if attacked.
The farmer’s weathered face smiles, crinkly eyes watching the horizon.
His thirsty fields look toward harvest, his heart is greatly relieved.
Irrigation ditches flow there brown nourishing soup.
Colts kick back legs, the mare brays her admonition.
She grins, lips up, presenting big white teeth, tossing her mane.
A jack rabbit bounds by and field mice scurry.
When the rain fell, as the summer came to fruition,
Hope and faith filled hearts as the cycle started anew.
Wells of sustenance filled in barren lands,
Giving precious life and verge when certain death was imminent.
The sky delighted in its gift,
When the rains fell.
