MAXIM MAZUMDAR NEW PLAY COMPETITION
The annual international competition was founded in 1989 by Alleyway Theatre in memory of Canadian actor/playwright Maxim Mazumdar (1953-1988). Mr. Mazumdar's many contributions to the early growth of Alleyway Theatre were artistically invaluable, and instrumental in shaping a continuing relationship with Canadian theatre. It was at Alleyway Theatre that Mr. Mazumdar gave his final performance in the premiere of his original musical LUPERCAL on March 27, 1988.
Eligibility
The competition is open to anyone, of any age and citizenship, but limited to one submission per category, per author, per year. Although an entry may be of any style, preference will be given to those scripts which are uniquely theatrical. Entries must be not previously produced and must be withheld from production during the period of the competition. Plays or musicals which have had workshops or staged readings are eligible for submission.
Three Categories
Full Length: Play or musical not less than 90 minutes, any style, no more than 10 performers.
One-Act: Play or musical, less than 25 minutes, any style, no more than 6 performers.
Play For Children: Play or musical less than 60 minutes, no more than 5 performers
Musicals must be accompanied by audio tape.
Fee
An entry fee of $5.00/U.S. per playwright per year, regardless of number of categories entered, must be submitted with manuscript(s) or sound tape(s), check made payable to: Alleyway Theatre Incorporated.
Annual Timetable
Submission Deadline: postmarked by July 1st.
Announcement Of Finalists: each October 1st
Announcement Of Winners: each November 1st.
Prizes/Productions
The winning full-length will receive its premiere production at Alleyway Theatre during the season which begins ten months after the announcement of winners, and a royalty/prize will be awarded. The winning one-act will receive its premiere in the annual Buffalo Quickies festival, and a royalty/prize will be awarded. The winning play for children will be considered for premiere by KidShowCo, Alleyway Theatre's children's theatre company.
Details
Entry in the Maxim Mazumdar New Play Competition constitutes the author's agreement that, in the event of being declared a Winner, he/she will grant first production rights to Alleyway Theatre under the terms of Alleyway Theatre's Standard Production Agreement (sample available upon request, additional terms will not be negotiated). There is no entry form. Entries will be returned by mail only when a self addressed stamped envelope is provided.
