Queen Amanizar has inherited a crumbling empire ringed with encroaching enemies led by Prince Kovazar, her deposed older brother. She finds herself betrayed by court wizard Khanagon, who enjoyed being her regent had hoped to be the power behind the throne but shifts his loyalties to Kovazar when he finds out he cannot control her. Her only hope of saving her people from her enemies is to find the long-lost Heart of the Tengeri, a fabled talisman which contains the strength and power of the empire.
With no magical gifts of her own, Queen Amanizar must rely upon her wits and courage to defeat her brother and restore peace to her people. She isn't alone, though. Tenzen, the handsome Jakaeli prince is a former ally of her brother who, finding himself betrayed, has resolved to help the young queen and finds himself falling in love with her. Boczar, strong and canny, pledged his sword and life to her father and now to her. She is joined by Danzia, the elderly Dakhanni woman who has almost magical skill with a sword.
Eventually she finds the Heart but loses her kingdom and her freedom. In the end she must defend herself against her brother as he attempts to kill her with his own hands.
